Why journalists risk their lives

Iraq, the Philippines and Syria are the deadliest countries. In three decades of assignments covering world conflict, Mike Boettcher has witnessed, investigated, and been a victim of terrorism. He was kidnapped and threatened with execution in El Salvador in And 20 years later, he survived a suicide bomber attack and a roadside bombing in Baghdad.

Reporting should not have the lethal ramifications it does. It would be easy to say that the system needs to be changed, that journalists need protection while defending freedom of press.

However, journalists are harbingers of truth — making enemies and risking their lives tend to be part of their job description. It takes a certain type of bravery to confront systemic governmental corruption.

Caruana Galizia was a paragon of this, acting as an ombudsman, ceaselessly reporting on graft within the parliament of her island country. I knew of her for standing up against the rule of law. I sent the email to my professor at Northeastern University to make sense of the ever-burgeoning war on journalism. Should we risk our lives to report the truth? As a student, I struggle with the answer. But journalists must continue to report and do our jobs, and hopefully more awareness will bring more protection in the future.

In the weeks and months to come, let us not forget what she did, the sacrifices she made. Her death should not be relegated to a statistic. Every journalist, aspiring or established, should follow the model set by Caruana Galizia: Continue to report and propagate freedom.

Some journalists were embedded in coalition units. Journalists have some international protection. Under the Geneva Convention, journalists are to be treated as civilians in times of conflict; harming or killing them is a war crime.

Yet some journalists believe the new types of war - and war coverage - may blur the line between civilians and combatants, unless opposing forces are close enough to tell who is shooting pictures rather than bullets. Economics are also taking a toll. Commonly, but not exclusively, stringers and freelancers are also often younger, less experienced journalists. Data and anecdotal evidence from various conflicts seem to indicate that a considerable number of injuries and deaths occur among journalists working on temporary contracts.

The IFJ also insisted that media companies take their share of the responsibility. Against the backdrop of the war in the former Yugoslavia, and with the death toll mounting, the IFJ and its member unions pushed hard to create a tripartite approach to the issue. Today, many IFJ member unions, in cooperation with media companies and military authorities, have created intensive war preparation training programmes for their members.

Many media unions include the right to safety training in their collective agreements.
