The Dalai Lama is not the name of the person. It is like the Pope. The Pope is called the Pope, but it is not his actually name. Those visions gave him and his trustees clues onto who the next Dalai Lama will be. Eventually, those clues and sights led to the current Dalai Lama when he was a little kid. The Dalai Lama is a Buddhist. The Dalai Lama is now vegetarian. The Dalai Lama won't retire. Like being a Bishop, being a Lama is a job for life. The 14th Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso. Dalai Lama lived in the Potala.
Tibetan Buddhists believe that any dalai lama is the reincarnation of the previous dalai lama. After the death of one dalai lama, high-ranking monks look for extraordinary children born after the dalai lama's death, with miraculous signs surrounding their birth.
Once they have identified a candidate, they present him with possessions of the previous dalai lama, as well as with decoys. The child has to pick the possessions that actually belonged to him in a previous life. The current dalai lama, the 14th, has indicated that he will be the last dalai lama.

His Holiness, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is a pivotal figure on the subject of spiritualism, politics and the oppressed of the world. Unlike his predecessors, he has been prompt to take advantage of the Information Age and spread a message of peace. In addition to authoring scores of books, he has travelled the world to speak before large crowds.
Thousands collect to hear the message of non-violence given by the Dalai Lama in his speech. Speaking in English, the Dalai Lama can certainly hold his own even discussing topics that would stump many native speakers. Having an interpreter at his side is, in some ways, more for his own sense of security than out of necessity.
But for Dorjee, it meant standing close by and remaining attentive at all times, ready to perform a task he calls intensely challenging but a great honor. On days Dorjee translated for the Dalai Lama, he was almost constantly at his side, at the center of an impermeable security bubble usually reserved for heads of state.
These days the Dalai Lama's schedule is less demanding but Dorjee recalls working with him years earlier in India. He is a human but also a divine being and so we put him on a pedestal. I couldn't imagine being in his presence but I was asked to translate.
It was the first time and I got nervous. No one will call me back. But they did call back, repeatedly. When the Dalai Lama speaks on subjects as varied as tantric meditation, quantum physics or ethics and genetics, very few interpreters can match his pace. The Pillars of Peace events in Hawaii, he says, were relatively simple because the audiences were primarily students and the general public and the topics — pursuing peace and cultivating compassion — were relatively easy.
Chan explains that it's not uncommon for the Dalai Lama to speak uninterrupted for 15 to 20 minutes before pausing for an interpreter to recall the entire monologue.
