What makes a librarian

We sprayed them with water from our office window. Seriously, my father threatened to give me a monogrammed pooper scooper for Christmas one year because of all the poo cleaning I did at work! I soon discovered that Library Science was a great fit for my strengths, allowing me to be tech-savvy, contemplative, organized, creative, and innovative. I love books and singing badly and showing off, and now I get paid to do that to a willing audience.

That evolved to me constantly researching stuff that I found interesting, then doing it for other people. Going to library school was a natural progression. My neighborhood library had a small collection. Thanks to these books, I learned to read and write English. Because I would constantly come in the library, it became my refuge. My undergraduate degree led me to discover the world of politics and activism, which has given me experiences in information management, community engagement, and advocacy.

Now I connect communities in my workplace and beyond it, which I believe is essential for librarianship. My darling, wonderful, powerhouse of a boss slipped a flyer for library school across my desk. I have an year-old daughter who tells me all the time how cool she thinks my job is. I am a first-generation college graduate, and the path of librarianship has unfolded in front of me.

I only regret not following it sooner. Libraries are community centers that are funded by local money, and they need your support too. Contact Arianna Rebolini at arianna.

A job with scope. As a child, when people asked me what I wanted to be, I have to admit I never said librarian.

Although I used and enjoyed libraries, it never occurred to me to actually work in one. I did say that I wanted a job with scope. I am not sure what I meant by that then, but I know what it means now. It means being a librarian. I do dozens of different things every day. When you work with people, changing technologies, and always-new resources, how could it be? It pays the rent. As a librarian, I will never get rich. However, it has allowed me to live alone without the dreaded roommate , subsist moderately well, and be employable in different markets and in changing times.

Good working conditions. Cool coworkers. I love librarians also see 9. We are intelligent, cultured, well-read people who bring a myriad of skills, backgrounds, and interests to the job. I know librarians who are former attorneys, truck drivers, teachers, and factory workers.

This experiential, intellectual potpourri makes for an interesting mix. And librarians are readers. Grand purpose.

As librarians, we support the freedom to read. Before, you need to think about what type of book you will actually buy for your library.

Thus, you need to be curious and stay up to date with new releases, and you need to be creative in your choices in order to make your library stand out. After, you need to show readers how interesting thatbook is. Thus, you will probably think about creative ways to display it on the shelves or about a little exhibition around that book. In my library, we love creating selections of books around specific topics and display them gracefully on dedicated tables.

Thus, the book comes to the reader and not the other way around. Once more, I really do think being creative is one of the most important qualities in that job as it will dictate what you buy and how you present it to readers. Thus, your creativity basically dictates the life of the library. Last but not least, you need to be joyful.

Moreover, people usually come in libraries to live a moment out of time and forget about their everyday struggles. Thus, you want in the limit of what is possible to help that process by being joyful. Libraries tend to calm me and to be honest, even after my recent breakup, going to work in my beautiful library was one of the most therapeutic things in the world.

Being joyful in libraries tends to be natural for me, and thus I hope that I am able to share that feeling with readers. As you understood, being a librarian means a lot to me and I have quite a clear image of the librarian I personally want to be. However, please keep in mind that these ideas are only mine and that not every librarian has to be this way. I have colleagues who differ a lot from some of the points mentionned today, and it does not prevent them from being perfect librarians.

We all have different ideas and ideals, which is fine. I only want this post to give you a global idea of the qualities you might want to look for in yourself in you are considering that job.

If you are true to yourself, then you will naturally be attracted to what is really meant for you which applies to jobs too. Email Address:. Sign Up.
