Ultimately, Nikolas agreed to marry Ava so she would hand over the codicil and Valentin was kicked out of the mansion. Spencer, in particular, took the news hard. Nikolas and Ava found themselves trapped in a marriage where neither could leave without giving up a fortune although they soon realized they had a lot in common and ultimately admitted their love for each other!
Nikolas decided to make it official and proposed to Ava properly to make their union real. Nikolas wanted to fight for his marriage but Ava took out a restraining order to keep him away from her and planned to leave the country until the stalker was found. Nikolas believed her but grew angry that she hid Julian in Wyndemere and he wanted to know why. She told him the truth - that she didn't know the full extent of Julian's latest crime until it was too late. Once she learned the full extent of Julian blowing up the Floating Rib, she came back to Wybdemere to kill him herself, but Julian jumped off the parapet once Sonny and Jason got there.
Ava confessed that when it came down to it, she chose Nikolas and confessed her feelings for him. Emily comes back again to help Nikolas She tells Nikolas about all the heinous acts Britt has committed and Nikolas confronts Britt.
Furious that she lied to him, Nikolas kicks Britt out of his life. Helena returns to Port Charles, and takes up residence at Wyndemere. She blackmails Nikolas into letting her stay over the fact that he rigged the mayoral election, so that Lomax would win again. Nikolas is shocked when Helena reveals that the newly arrived "Jake Doe" is Jason Morgan with amnesia. Nikolas also finds out that Helena and Luke Spencer are working together.
Nikolas questions, Luke and Helena's alliance; but Helena remains vague about it. Nikolas continues on with Helena plans to get control of ELQ, and also becomes involved with Hayden Barnes , who is posing as the mysterious "Jake Doe's" wife. When Nikolas learns the full truth behind Hayden's scheme at the Nurses Ball, he wants to cut ties with her. She said she would give him the codicil because she wanted Spencer to get back everything that was rightfully his, but there were certain terms to be met.
He gave her the post-nup papers they signed and she initially snapped at him because she thought he was throwing the post-nup in her face, but Nikolas told her that he was giving them to her so they could destroy it. Ava was relieved and asked why didn't he say so before she tore up the post-nup papers. Nikolas then told her that there was one more thing standing between them before he took her to the hospital to see Ryan.
